Sonya Walger Joins Cast of Prime Video’s "God of War" Adaptation
Sonya Walger, known for her role in For All Mankind, has been cast as Freya in the upcoming adaptation of God of War for Prime Video. This series is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, drawing from the rich mythology of the popular PlayStation video game.
Freya is a pivotal character in the God of War franchise. As a Vanir goddess and former Queen of the Valkyries, she is adept in ancient magic. Once married to Odin, she found herself exiled following the dissolution of their marriage, severing ties with her home, Vanaheim, and her family. For the past century, Freya has lived as a recluse in Midgard, often feared by humans and dubbed the "Witch of the Woods."
The narrative of God of War centers on Kratos, portrayed by Ryan Hurst, and his son Atreus, played by Callum Vinson. Their journey involves fulfilling the last wishes of their wife and mother, Faye, intertwining themes of godhood and humanity as they learn from one another.
The series has been granted a two-season order, with Ronald D. Moore, acclaimed for Outlander and For All Mankind, serving as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Production is currently underway in Vancouver.
Additional members of the cast include Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, and many others, bringing a formidable ensemble to life. Moore is joined by executive producers Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, and others, with Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye set to direct the first two episodes.
God of War is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in partnership with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
Walger previously starred as Molly Cobb in the first three seasons of For All Mankind and has appeared in notable roles such as Penny on Lost. Her latest film feature includes an indie project titled Forge, and she is also the author of an upcoming novel, Wifehouse, set to release on April 7.
