Sony Enlists Brian Helgeland to Write Screenplay for ‘Django/Zorro’ Adaptation Based on Tarantino-Wagner Comic
Sony Pictures Launches Development on "Django/Zorro" Film
Sony Pictures is set to develop a highly anticipated film project, enlisting Academy Award-winning writer Brian Helgeland to script "Django/Zorro." This movie marks a continuation of a storyline that originated from a seven-issue crossover comic co-written by renowned filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and comic creator Matt Wagner, published by Dynamite Entertainment in 2014.
The comic series served as a potential sequel to Tarantino’s acclaimed film "Django Unchained," featuring Jamie Foxx as the titular character—a former slave turned bounty hunter. Although Tarantino directed the original film, he will not direct the new project; however, he has given his approval for it to proceed at Sony. This film is expected to be his final directorial effort.
Currently in early development, Helgeland’s script will continue the narrative established in the comic. In the series, Django pursues notorious targets as a bounty hunter while forming a connection with Don Diego de la Vega. The character, portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in the 1998 film "The Mask of Zorro," notably passed the Zorro mantle to Alejandro Murrieta, played by Antonio Banderas. Early reports suggest that the film will center on a younger version of Zorro.
The collaboration between Tarantino and Wagner in the comic created high hopes for a film adaptation, which initially gained traction before the COVID-19 pandemic stunted progress. With rights now secured, Helgeland, known for his work in films featuring strong male leads, is poised to rejuvenate the project. His notable previous works include "Man on Fire," "42," and "Legend."
As Tarantino prepares to release his tenth and final film, he is also focused on his playwriting debut, "The Popinjay Cavalier," expected to premiere in London’s West End early next year. Meanwhile, Brad Pitt will reprise his Oscar-winning role from "Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood" in the upcoming film "The Adventures of Cliff Booth," initially intended for Tarantino but now directed by David Fincher for Netflix.
Both Helgeland and Tarantino are represented by WME, and a spokesperson for Sony Pictures declined to comment on the project at this time.
