Sierra Canyon Boys and Girls Basketball Teams Set for Regional Double-Header This Saturday
Sierra Canyon High School made history on Saturday night by becoming the first school to sweep both the boys’ and girls’ Southern Section Open Division basketball championships in a single season. As a result of their impressive performance, both teams earned No. 1 seeds for the Southern California regional playoffs, which commence on Tuesday and lead up to the state championships scheduled for March 13-14 at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.
To secure a chance at a trip to Sacramento, Sierra Canyon’s teams will need to defend their home court in Chatsworth. The boys’ team begins its journey with a first-round bye in a six-team tournament and will face the winner of Wednesday’s matchup between Santa Margarita and Redondo Union on Saturday. The second-seeded Harvard-Westlake will also be in action, hosting the victor of the game between Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and Santa Maria St. Joseph.
In the Open Division girls’ tournament, which consists of just four teams, top-seeded Sierra Canyon will host Sage Hill in a highly anticipated boys-girls doubleheader on Saturday. Meanwhile, No. 2 Ontario Christian will take on Etiwanda at home.
In Division 1 boys, La Mirada is set to make history with its first state playoff home game. Having secured the No. 12 seed in the Southern Section Open Division and reaching the semifinals, the Matadores are now the top seed in the regional playoffs and will host Mater Dei on Tuesday in a competitive 16-team field. Corona Centennial, Crespi, and St. John Bosco follow as the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 seeds, respectively.
The regional finals are scheduled for March 10.
