Showrunner Discusses Raising the Bar with a Two-Part Mystery and Exciting Plans for Season 3 of High Potential
SPOILERS: This report discusses details from the Season 2 episode of High Potential, titled "The One That Got Away: Part Two."
Kaitlin Olson reprises her role as Morgan Gillory, the astute consultant, as High Potential returns from its midseason break.
As the series approaches its Season 2 finale, show creator Todd Harthan expressed optimism about its future. “As we tumble towards our Season 2 penultimate finale, I think the audience can look forward to just as satisfying, if not even more exhilarating push-off into a potential Season 3,” he said. Harthan noted that the upcoming episodes promise to be more personal and surprising than before, reflecting the growth of the characters and the lessons learned from previous seasons.
In the latest episode, "The One That Got Away: Part Two," Morgan becomes wary of art consultant Rhys (Aiden Turner). Their heated encounter leads to the revelation of a scar that links him to the suspected art thief Jean Baptiste. As the two-part mystery unfolds, Rhys’s true intentions begin to emerge.
Harthan emphasized the stakes of this particular storyline, stating, “We hadn’t done anything even sort of like this as it relates to a meaningful guest star… There were a lot of things that played up the stakes, that just were not in the DNA of any other episode we’ve done before.” This midseason finale was crafted to have the depth deserving of a two-part series.
Meanwhile, character Soto (Judy Reyes) aids Morgan in investigating the mysterious disappearance of Roman. Her efforts lead her to Arthur (Mekhi Phifer), but when he vanishes too, the threat intensifies for Morgan.
Harthan acknowledged the need to begin resolving concerns about Roman’s storyline. "We owe it to the audience to start filling in some of the Roman blanks, but as you do that, our job is also to have danger and stakes swell," he remarked. He reassured viewers that the upcoming episodes will continue to heighten the tension surrounding Morgan’s family.
As the plot thickens, viewers will see familiar themes of wealth and power explored. “Morgan’s never gonna come out and say, ‘I hate the rich,’” Harthan shared. “But what she doesn’t like is people that have wealth and have power and then abuse it.” He hinted at more episodes that will tackle fraud and corruption among the affluent.
In an exchange about the burgeoning chemistry between Soto and Arthur, Harthan noted the natural rapport between the actors, setting the stage for potential developments in their relationship as the season unfolds.
Overall, Harthan expressed his enthusiasm for the series ahead, indicating that fans can expect significant story arcs for various characters, including Daphne and Oz, as well as an exciting lineup of guest stars. As the narrative approaches the climax, he aims to create a distinct flavor that promises richer storytelling and deeper character exploration.
As viewers anticipate the continuation of Season 2, new episodes air Tuesdays at 9/8c on ABC.
