Sho Evans Leads Cleveland to Overtime Victory Against Fairfax in City Section Playoff Basketball
Cleveland High’s Sho Evans Shines in Overtime to Secure Victory Over Fairfax
Sophomore Sho Evans of Cleveland High displayed resilience and determination on Saturday night, leading his team to a thrilling 68-64 victory over Fairfax in the City Section Open Division semifinals at L.A. Southwest College. Despite missing a potential game-winning shot at the end of regulation, Evans shone in overtime, helping the Cavaliers secure a spot in the final against top-seeded Palisades, which had defeated San Pedro 71-56.
In the crucial moments of overtime, Evans scored five of his seven points, including a pivotal shot with 50 seconds remaining that put Cleveland ahead 64-60. Evans was fouled on the play and successfully converted the ensuing free throw—a blow from which Fairfax could not recover, despite their spirited effort throughout the game.
“I just had to have that shooter’s mentality when you miss or make, keep shooting,” Evans said. “My teammates and coaches trust me to make shots.”
Cleveland’s victory was not without its challenges. Senior Charlies Adams led the team with 24 points and played a key role in sending the game into overtime. He made a critical free throw with just 2.6 seconds left in regulation after being fouled on an offensive rebound from Evans’ missed shot.
Fairfax’s defense, which switched between man-to-man and a trapping zone, caused a number of turnovers for Cleveland in the second half, but the Cavaliers maintained their composure when it mattered most. Ketrayl Roberson was the top scorer for Fairfax with 15 points, while Chris Stokes contributed 13 points.
Cleveland faces a formidable opponent in Palisades during the upcoming final. Historically, no City Section team has come closer than 21 points against Palisades this season, and the Dolphins defeated San Pedro by 15 points in the semifinals.
Palpably feeling the pressure, Cleveland will need to muster all their strength and strategy to compete against a Palisades team showcasing freshman standout Phillip Reed, who scored 29 points in his latest performance. The Dolphins have added significant depth with the arrival of the Popoola twins, EJ and OJ, further solidifying their roster as a force in the competition.
As the final approaches, Cleveland will look to harness their momentum from the semifinals and rise to the challenge ahead.
