The announcement was made on Monday morning (March 30) by the U.K.’s public service broadcaster. A spokesperson stated, “while we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted and has left the BBC.” Mills has not yet publicly responded to the news.
Throughout his tenure, Mills hosted numerous high-profile interviews featuring artists like Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, Louis Tomlinson, and Robbie Williams. He took over the Breakfast Show slot in 2025 after Zoe Ball’s departure, having joined Radio 2 in 2022.
In a message to staff, Lorna Clarke, the BBC Director of Music, remarked, “I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected and therefore must come as a shock. Not least as so many of us have worked with Scott over a great many years, across a broad range of our programs on R1, 5Live, R2, and TV. I felt it was important to share this news with you at the earliest opportunity.”
Mills began his career at the BBC in 1998, initially holding several roles at Radio 1, the organization’s youth-focused station. In 2022, after 24 years, he left Radio 1 for his new position on Radio 2.
In addition to the Breakfast Show, Mills appeared on various television programs, including The Pop Years and the BBC coverage of the Eurovision Song Contest. According to the latest annual report, he earned between £355,000 and £359,999 ($469,000), making him one of the highest-paid stars at the organization.
Mills was absent from Monday’s broadcast, with Gary Davies stepping in as host for the remainder of the week.
