Sam Smith showcased a strikingly whimsical look at the Met Gala on May 4, revealing just how weighty his ensemble was during an interview on the red carpet.
In a conversation with Emma Chamberlain for Vogue, alongside partner Christian Cowan—who designed the outfit—Smith noted that their black, sparkly robe and feathered headpiece was “the heaviest thing I’ve ever worn in my life” before stepping into the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
“It’s a massive workout,” Smith added. “It’s making me alert. It’s like a corset on the shoulders.”
Cowan further disclosed the weight of Smith’s attire: an impressive 52 pounds.
An examination of the multi-textured outfit reveals the reason behind its considerable weight. Cowan shared on his Instagram that the sparkles on Smith’s jacket comprised 255,000 individual crystals and beads, taking 2,000 hours of hand sewing to complete.
Cowan described the look as “a love letter to the king of fashion illustration, and to my love, Sam.” The couple has been together since around 2023.
Smith stood among numerous other celebrities dressed for the occasion, which was co-chaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour. This year’s theme, “Costume Art,” challenged attendees to dress according to the motto “Fashion Is Art,” with stars like Bad Bunny, Sabrina Carpenter, Madonna, and BLACKPINK interpreting the theme in their unique styles.
