Robert Irwin Reintroduces Occa, His Late Father’s Favorite Cockatoo
In a heartfelt social media post, Robert Irwin, the wildlife conservationist and Dancing with the Stars champion, introduced fans to Occa the cockatoo, a cherished companion of his late father, Steve Irwin. The Instagram video, shared on January 20, highlighted the long-standing connection between the Irwin family and the bird.
"Say ‘hi,’ Occa," Robert prompts in the clip, to which Occa responds with a series of "kisses." The 60-year-old sulphur-crested cockatoo, known for its striking yellow crest and friendly disposition, has been part of the Australia Zoo for many years.
Robert elaborated on Occa’s long life expectancy, noting that while these birds can live 20 to 40 years in the wild, they often exceed 70 years as pets. “He’s been here for ages! We absolutely love him,” Robert remarked. “He was also one of my dad’s very favorite animals, and he’s an absolute icon. Aren’t you, mate?”
The video feature also includes archival footage of Steve Irwin introducing Occa alongside another cockatoo, Whitey. In the old clip, Steve explains that male cockatoos have black eyes, while females have red, a detail that emphasizes the distinctiveness of both birds.
During the recent filming, Occa displayed playful energy, even jumping for the camera. Robert showered affection on Occa, exclaiming, “You are very handsome,” which prompted the cockatoo to affectionate reach up, as if to kiss Robert’s cheek.
Fans recently spotted Occa when Robert returned to Australia following his win on Dancing with the Stars. In a video showcasing his new Mirrorball Trophy, he introduced a koala, a snake, and a cockatoo that eagerly explored the surroundings, highlighting the ongoing bond between the Irwin family and their beloved animals.
