Rob Reiner’s last movie is reportedly on hold following his death. Bleecker Street, which acquired Spinal Tap at Stonehenge: The Final Finale, had initially announced a release in 2026 for IMAX theaters. However, plans have been suspended until a suitable path forward is determined in consultation with those closest to Reiner and his family, according to Variety.
The production team has reached out for comments from Bleecker Street and the Reiner family.
A press release from October confirmed that Reiner shot the concert film at the prehistoric site in England. This film serves as a follow-up to the 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, which was Reiner’s directorial debut. The original film, centered around a fictional rock band’s reunion, has since gained a cult following.
Actors Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, and Michael McKean reprised their roles in Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which was released in September. The third film features cameos from artists such as Josh Groban, Shania Twain, and Eric Clapton and is expected to conclude the band’s narrative.

Kent Sanderson, CEO of Bleecker Street, remarked in the October press release, “How fitting is it that this actual-probable-send-off is shot, historically, at Stonehenge, the mysterious landmark that we now know must have been erected thousands of years ago purely to serve as the setting for the last act of Spinal Tap.”
Reiner, 78, was discovered deceased in his Los Angeles home on December 14, alongside his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, who was 70. Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested that day and subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder, currently being held without bail.
In the wake of Reiner’s passing, close friend Eric Idle expressed his sorrow and noted that they had spoken about the third Spinal Tap movie just prior to Reiner’s death. "Rob Reiner was a lovely man. I spoke to him last night for over an hour," Idle wrote on December 15. "I always enjoyed his company. He was telling me about [filming] at Stonehenge and his thoughts for the future. This is so awful."

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Reiner discussed the decision to create a Spinal Tap sequel, released four decades after the original film. “Well, it is interesting because we never intended to do a sequel," he noted. "People over the years have come up to us and said, ‘Yeah, you can do a sequel.’ We said, ‘No, we did it. It’s done. We’ve done it.’”
Reiner added, “It wasn’t until we had an idea that we thought, ‘Oh, this can stand on its own.’ Even if you haven’t seen the first one, this film will stand on its own. It’s about an aging rock band who has to do one more concert and what happens.”
