- Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were found dead in their home on December 14, with their son Nick, 32, charged with murder.
- A source revealed that the couple “never lost hope” in their son, who battled drug addiction for years.
- “They thought they had more time before it resulted in tragedy,” the source added.
Rob and Michele Reiner were committed to their son Nick’s wellbeing, according to a source close to the family. Despite their efforts, Nick was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his parents.
“His issues were far, far out of his parents’ control,” the source explained, highlighting the complexity of his struggles with addiction and related challenges. Nick had reportedly been open about his battles with homelessness and repeated stints in rehab, but the source noted that he “didn’t take [his parents’] help seriously” for years.
As parents, Rob and Michele, who also had two other children, Jake and Romy, were described as empathetic toward Nick’s difficulties. They “never lost hope in him, even when he was scaring them or making their lives harder,” said the source.
“Nick had so many good days too,” the source added, emphasizing the unpredictability of his struggles. “They thought they had more time before it resulted in tragedy.”

On Sunday, December 14, Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were discovered deceased in their Los Angeles home. Known for their admirable work-life balance while raising their children, sources indicated that the couple had invested significant effort into their family, especially as their children transitioned into adulthood.
Nick appeared in court on December 17, with his attorney Alan Jackson declining to enter a plea on his behalf. His arraignment is scheduled to continue on January 7.
The couple’s other children, Jake, 34, and Romy, 28, expressed their grief over the “horrific and devastating loss” of their parents in a statement: “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day.”
