Riz Ahmed Takes on Hamlet and More: A Look at Exit 8, The Christophers, New Faces of Death, and Behind the Scenes
Indie Films and Concerts Energize the Weekend Box Office
This weekend ushers in a vibrant array of independent film releases, ranging from original works to adaptations of popular media, including a remake of a cult horror classic and a reimagining of Shakespeare. Amid this cinematic landscape, the global K-pop sensation BTS makes a highly anticipated return, while a documentary featuring journalist Amy Goodman is generating strong pre-sales in New York City.
One of the standout releases is Independent Film Company’s reimagining of the 1978 cult horror film Faces of Death, featuring newcomers Barbie Ferreira and Dacre Montgomery. Directed by Daniel Goldhaber, the film is not a mere reboot but tackles the original’s controversial premise, posing the question of reality versus fiction. Ferreira stars as a content moderator for a TikTok-like platform who stumbles upon what appears to be re-enactments of murders depicted in the original film. Written by Goldhaber and Isa Mazzei, it invites viewers to navigate a world where truth is elusive and danger is ever-present.
The marketing strategy for Faces of Death aims to counter conventional studio offerings, utilizing a bold campaign that highlights the film’s provocative legacy. Its original teaser was removed from YouTube due to its graphic nature, yet the red band trailer achieved 27 million views—setting a record for an IFC film. As of Thursday, the film reported $450,000 in sales, its second-highest Thursday performance following the success of Clown In A Cornfield.
In a separate release, Neon is presenting Exit 8, a Japanese thriller directed by Genki Kawamura, on 490 screens. Based on a popular video game, the film stars Yamato Kôchi as a man navigating a sterile subway system in search of an elusive exit. With a unique premise centered on vigilance against anomalies, the film garnered positive reviews at film festivals such as Cannes and TIFF and has become a significant box office success in Japan, grossing over $35 million.
Additionally, Neon is also rolling out Steven Soderbergh’s The Christophers in limited releases in New York and Los Angeles. The film stars Ian McKellen as a once-celebrated figure in the London art scene who now lives in seclusion. Accompanying the film’s debut is a series of free talks titled Canvas On The Silver Screen, featuring prominent figures from the art world.
Vertical Entertainment is releasing a modern adaptation of Hamlet, directed by Aneil Karia and produced by Riz Ahmed. Set within London’s elite South Asian community, the film introduces a contemporary twist on Shakespeare’s classic tale of revenge and familial betrayal. Premiering at the Telluride Film Festival, it invites audiences to re-examine familiar themes in a new cultural context.
Further enriching the weekend offerings, GKids is bringing ChaO, an anime comedy directed by Yasuhiro Aoki, to approximately 270 screens. The film explores a whimsical future where humans and mermaids coexist, following a shy shipbuilder and a mermaid princess as they navigate unexpected romance amid chaos.
Documentary Steal This Story, Please!, chronicling the life of journalist Amy Goodman, opens at the IFC Center in New York before expanding to Los Angeles next week and beyond. Featuring contributions from Oscar-nominated filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin, the film has resonated with audiences at festivals, winning multiple awards for its impactful storytelling.
Moreover, Trafalgar Releasing, Hybe, and Bight Music are facilitating BTS’s return to the stage with BTS World Tour ‘Arirang’ in Goyang: Live Viewing, which will be presented at 1,200 theaters across North America. This tour marks the group’s first in four years, spanning 34 cities with live screenings of full-length concerts.
As the box office atmosphere buzzes with excitement, theater owners and distributors, including many independent voices, are preparing for a pivotal gathering at CinemaCon in Las Vegas next week.
