Review of Pretty Lethal: Maddie Ziegler and Uma Thurman Star in a Gripping Ballerina Revenge Story at SXSW
Director Vicky Jewson’s latest film, Pretty Lethal, premiered during the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, offering a fresh perspective on the action genre through a darkly comedic and emotionally resonant female lens.
The film, written by Kate Freund, follows five young ballerinas and their coach as they journey to a showcase in Budapest. Their adventure takes a perilous turn when their bus breaks down, stranding them in a remote area far from the city.
Seeking refuge at an inn, the group encounters Devora, portrayed by Uma Thurman, a former ballerina whose dreams were thwarted by a leg injury. This encounter sets the stage for unfolding drama as the dancers face a menacing threat.
When one of their own is murdered by Pasha, played by Tamás Szabó Sipos, the young women must confront their differences and unite to escape their dire situation.
Thurman shines in her role as a vengeful matriarch intertwined with a world of crime, supported by a talented cast of emerging actresses. Maddie Ziegler, as Bones, plays a defiant dancer whose tough exterior clashes with that of her rival, Princess, portrayed by Lana Condor. Their humorous exchanges enhance the film while also highlighting their growth as teammates.
Sisters Zoe and Chloe, played by Iris Apatow and Millicent Simmonds, navigate the challenges of their relationship, especially as Chloe’s deafness necessitates Zoe’s assistance with dance cues. As the plot progresses, they develop a stronger bond while combating a mansion full of criminal henchmen.
Avantika stands out as Grace, a comedic character whose drug-induced antics provide levity even in the face of danger. Her fearless confrontations with grown men further illustrate the film’s balance between serious themes and humor.
Pretty Lethal masterfully combines the grit of action films reminiscent of John Wick and Quentin Tarantino’s works with heartfelt moments of sisterhood and laughter. This film highlights the need for diversity within Hollywood’s action genre.
