Retired NASCAR Driver Greg Biffle and Family Tragically Lost in Plane Crash
STATESVILLE, N.C. — Former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and six other individuals lost their lives in a plane crash Thursday near Statesville Regional Airport, approximately 45 miles north of Charlotte, according to state police.
The private jet caught fire upon impact while attempting to land at the airport. Initial assessments revealed that the post-crash fire has hindered the identification of all occupants; however, authorities believe that Biffle and members of his immediate family were on board.
Biffle, 55, was a prominent figure in motorsports, having won over 50 races across NASCAR’s three major series, including 19 victories in the Cup Series. He also secured the Trucks Series championship in 2000 and clinched the Xfinity Series title in 2002.
Eyewitnesses from nearby Lakewood Golf Club expressed shock as they witnessed the crash. Joshua Green, a golfer in Mooresville, recalled, “We were like, ‘Oh my gosh! That’s way too low.’ It was scary.” Debris was reportedly strewn across the ninth hole of the golf course.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are currently investigating the incident. Weather reports from AccuWeather indicated light drizzle and cloud cover at the time of the crash.
Flight tracking data revealed that the aircraft had taken off shortly after 10 a.m. and had returned to attempt a landing at Statesville. The flight originally planned to travel from Sarasota, Florida, to Treasure Cay International Airport in the Bahamas before heading back to Fort Lauderdale and returning to Statesville later that evening.
Footage from WSOC-TV showcased first responders rushing to the scene as flames engulfed parts of the wreckage. Statesville Regional Airport is known for providing corporate aviation services to various Fortune 500 companies and several NASCAR teams.
