Republic Film Teams Up with XPrize for Exciting Global Sci-Fi Movie Contest
Republic Film, a relatively new platform that has successfully connected notable filmmakers like Eli Roth and Robert Rodriguez with fan investors, has joined forces with the Future Vision XPRIZE. This initiative will allocate $3.5 million toward film projects that explore “optimistic science fiction storytelling about humanity’s technology-enabled future.”
XPRIZE, a nonprofit organization, hosts large-scale global incentive competitions across various sectors. The winning film concept in this competition will be awarded $2.5 million for production, complemented by extensive support from Range Media and innovative technology contributions from Google. Additionally, the winner will receive a $100,000 cash prize. Four finalists will each be granted $100,000, with another $500,000 to be announced later in the competition. Submissions for three-minute film trailers or short films opened this week.
Through this collaboration, Republic Film aims to introduce a public investment component to the initiative. This will allow audiences and the broader community to collectively fund the winning film with up to an additional $5 million in production capital while also sharing in the potential financial returns. The competition will close on August 15, although the fan investment campaign may launch before then.

Republic Film operates under its parent company, Republic, which offers investment opportunities in private markets worldwide across various sectors, including tech startups, real estate, and entertainment. With a member base of 3 million and a portfolio of over 2,500 companies, Republic claims to have deployed over $2.6 billion through its diverse investment platforms.
Launched in 2024 under the leadership of Marc Iserlis, Republic Film has seen notable fundraising success, including $18 million for Skybound from 5,000 investors and $3 million for Bucket List Studios from 30,000 investors. Since its inception, Eli Roth has secured $6 million from 2,500 investors for a new horror studio; Robert Rodriguez garnered $2 million from 2,200 investors for an action slate; Pressman Films raised $2 million for a new development slate; and Ron Perlman has raised $1 million from 1,000 investors for a filmmaker-first platform. Further partnerships are in the works.
The urgency for alternative funding models has grown as challenges in film financing and distribution become more pronounced. Republic Film offers solutions that extend beyond traditional wealthy private financiers or studio partnerships, enabling filmmakers to retain more creative control. This fan funding initiative is designed to generate built-in audience engagement, enhancing distribution leverage and increasing visibility.
“Everyday investors are deeply hungry for access to previously gatekept investment opportunities,” remarked Kendrick Nguyen, co-founder and co-CEO of Republic. He emphasized that the platform empowers fans to become genuine financial stakeholders in the films and filmmakers they admire.
Established in 1996 with the Ansari XPRIZE challenge, which aimed to create a reusable spacecraft, the XPRIZE foundation has since expanded into numerous fields, including education, health, energy, and climate. According to the organization, it has launched 30 competitions, engaged over 35,000 innovators across 173 countries, and transformed $519 million in prize money into $31 billion in measurable economic and social impact over the past three decades.
“The Future Vision XPRIZE is exactly the kind of project our platform was made for – enabling the greater sci-fi community of artists and audiences to connect in a completely new way and bring visionary new stories to life for the screen,” stated Peter Diamandis, founder and executive chairman of XPRIZE. He believes that the collaboration with Republic Film is an essential step toward the future of entertainment, where audience investment in storytelling strengthens independent filmmaking and improves the film’s chances for success.
