Remembering Rif Hutton: The Life and Legacy of the ‘Doogie Howser, M.D.’ and ‘General Hospital’ Actor at 73
Rif Hutton, a versatile actor known for his extensive work in television, passed away on Saturday, April 18, at his home in Pasadena after a year-long battle with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer. He was 73 years old.
The news of his death was confirmed by his family to TMZ and shared by close friends on social media.
“A remarkable human being has left this earthly plane,” stated Steve Apostolina, a friend and voice-over colleague. “To say that Rif Hutton was one of a kind is a gross understatement. People knew when they hired him for a voice job that he was going to be the most prepared – he always was. He was also always first to show up on a gig.”
Hutton’s career boasted nearly 200 television credits, including guest appearances on iconic shows such as The Jeffersons, Seinfeld, and American Horror Story. He had notable roles in series like Tribes (95 episodes), Doogie Howser, M.D. (17 episodes from 1989 to 1993), and General Hospital (32 episodes in 2021 and 2022).
His film work included the crime comedy Rattled! in 2022 and the animated feature Ice Age: Collision Course in 2016.
Apostolina recalled Hutton’s commitment to industry solidarity, noting, “When the SAG strike broke out, he was on the line every day at Warner Bros. – a constant vision of support.”
Hutton was diagnosed with a brain tumor in March 2025. He later participated in the National Brain Tumor Society’s Southern California Brain Tumor Walk, emphasizing the importance of community support. “Every person facing glioblastoma, or any brain disorder, deserves this kind of support,” he wrote. “There continues to be meaningful advancements in the fight against glioblastoma, and that fight needs all of us. Please support it in whatever way you can.”
He is survived by his wife, fellow voice actor Bridget Hoffman, and his son, Wolfy. Additional details about survivors were not immediately available.
