On January 16, 2025, the film industry mourned the loss of David Lynch, an iconic filmmaker just four days shy of his 79th birthday. His family, including daughters Jennifer and Lula, and sons Austin and Riley, confirmed the news via a post on his official Facebook page.
“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch,” the family wrote. “We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”
Lynch’s career spanned more than five decades, marked by his exploration of the unsettling aspects of human nature. In a 1990 interview, he stated, “I like things that go into hidden, mysterious places,” believing that “in that disturbing thing, there is sometimes tremendous poetry and truth.”
He first captured attention with the cult classic Eraserhead in 1977 and received three Academy Award nominations for The Elephant Man (1980), Blue Velvet (1986), and Mulholland Drive (2001). Lynch also created the groundbreaking television series Twin Peaks, which earned him nine Emmy nominations.
Lynch’s death came less than a year after he disclosed his emphysema diagnosis during an August 2024 interview with Sight & Sound magazine. He noted his condition was primarily due to “smoking for so long,” and he had been confined to his home as a result.

Lynch’s death certificate reveals that he succumbed to cardiac arrest as a result of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Emphysema, a type of COPD, significantly contributed to his condition, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. TMZ first reported that dehydration also played a significant role in his passing.
In the August 2024 interview, Lynch had candidly shared his diagnosis, mentioning that he remained homebound due to concerns about his health and his fear of contracting illnesses like COVID-19. He described the limitations he faced, stating that he could only walk short distances before struggling to breathe. Reflecting on his past, he acknowledged the consequences of his long-term smoking habit.
“Smoking was something that I absolutely loved but, in the end, it bit me,” he admitted. “It was part of the art life for me: the tobacco and its smell. Meanwhile, it’s killing me.”
