Ralph Macchio Envisions Future of Karate Kid
Ralph Macchio has expressed optimism about the future of the Karate Kid franchise, suggesting that a creative "reset" could ensure its longevity. Speaking at the 24 Hour Plays Annual Gala in Brooklyn, New York, the 64-year-old actor shared his insights on December 12 regarding the beloved series.
In a conversation with PEOPLE, Macchio noted that there have been "discussions" about the franchise’s direction. "I think there came between the series and the movie with Jackie Chan all that colliding at the same time. I just think there needs to be a reset," he explained. He emphasized the importance of honoring the franchise’s legacy while catering to a fanbase that has remained engaged since 1984. "You want to service and be organic and be true to the integrity of the characters. So that’s always a challenge once you are on the long game."
Despite the ongoing discussions, Macchio indicated that no concrete plans have been established. "Me and the guys who write that show and other actors involved, we’re all open to communicating. But something isn’t coming tomorrow. I don’t have that secret yet, but maybe we do a few other things. And Cobra Kai never dies. Karate Kid lives forever," he remarked.
The 24 Hour Plays Annual Gala is a unique charity event where actors are tasked with writing, rehearsing, and performing new plays within a 24-hour timeframe. The proceeds support various non-profit endeavors throughout the year, including educational programs for students and professional development for emerging artists.

Following his experience with Cobra Kai, Macchio participated in the 24-hour play challenge with enthusiasm. "I’m feeling great. I’m not gonna necessarily say it’s a bucket lister, but I’d like to challenge myself," he said. Reflecting on the past seven years of success with Cobra Kai and the Karate Legends movie, he added, "it was just like, let’s get my hands dirty and let’s cross over without a net. That’s how it felt. But a lot of love in the room and live theater and not everything’s perfect, but it was perfect for that moment."
