QWGmire Partners with Taka Ichise, the Mind Behind Japanese Horror Classics ‘Ring’ and ‘The Grudge’ for Development and Financing
QWGmire Partners with Taka Ichise to Develop New Horror Films
QWGmire, the independent production and film financing company founded by Molly C. Quinn, Matthew M. Welty, and Elan Gale, has announced a development and financing agreement with renowned Japanese producer Taka Ichise. Ichise is celebrated for his pivotal role in popularizing J-horror in the late 1990s and early 2000s, famously associated with films such as Ring and The Grudge.
Under this new partnership, Ichise and QWGmire will collaborate to create a slate of horror films aimed at the U.S. market. The teams already have four projects in development, with plans to initiate production within the next 18 months.
This collaboration marks Ichise’s return to American cinema since the release of Nicolas Pesce’s reboot of The Grudge in 2019. While details about the specific projects remain confidential, the goal is to craft a new wave of horror films that harness the unsettling themes, psychological depth, and artistic ambition that defined J-horror’s early impact on global cinema.
"I have always loved the feeling of sitting in a movie theater and being truly surprised by what unfolds on screen," Ichise said. "With this new partnership, we want to create that kind of experience again through stories that stay with audiences long after they leave the theater. I am excited to work with QWGmire because they share the same passion for bold, unforgettable filmmaking, and I look forward to bringing these new projects to life together."
Elan Gale of QWGmire echoed Ichise’s sentiments, stating, "Taka Ichise crafted my favorite mysteries and authored many of my nightmares. The opportunity to help create a new generation of horror films for a new generation of viewers is beyond my wildest dreams. We are honored to collaborate with him and cannot wait to share his new visions with the world."
Notably, Ichise has built a reputation for producing atmospheric and psychologically driven horror films that weave together folklore and contemporary fears, leading to significant success at the global box office, totaling around $1 billion. His film Ring, directed by Hideo Nakata, introduced audiences to a cursed videotape that brings death to viewers seven days post-viewing. The American remake, directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Naomi Watts, became a classic and birthed several sequels, including Paramount’s Rings in 2017. Meanwhile, Ju-On: The Grudge, directed by Takashi Shimizu, tells the tale of a vengeful spirit and has inspired various adaptations for international audiences, starting with the 2004 film featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar. Ichise is represented by UTA.
QWGmire, represented by WME, has recently contributed to Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Life of Chuck, along with Molly Gordon’s Oh, Hi!, and the newly released film Normal, which stars and is co-written by Bob Odenkirk.
