Prince William’s Concerns About Prince Andrew’s Role in the Royal Family Before His Exile
Prince William’s Call for Andrew’s Removal from Royal Life Documented
According to royal biographer Russell Myers, Prince William expressed a desire for his uncle, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, to be removed from royal duties long before the official decision was made. Andrew was stripped of his royal titles and privileges in October 2025, a move enacted by King Charles. Myers stated that Prince William’s concerns about Andrew’s association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein intensified after Andrew’s infamous 2019 BBC Newsnight interview.
In a recent interview, Myers noted that William was "adamant" following the interview, which showcased Andrew’s problematic responses regarding his friendship with Epstein. "Refusing to apologize for his relationship and refusing to acknowledge the actual trauma of Epstein victims was an absolute red line for William,” Myers said.
William reportedly communicated his feelings to both his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, and his father, King Charles, insisting, "He has to be banished. Andrew has to be rid of both the public and the private royal family."
The Andrew scandal, Myers observed, has cast a shadow over the royal family. He emphasized that if William were king, he would have taken significant steps to ensure Andrew was fully removed from royal life. “William understands that his father needs to take the lead on this, and he’s willing to support him in any way he can,” Myers added.
Both William and his wife, Kate Middleton, have expressed deep concern over the situation, recognizing its implications for their future roles within the monarchy. Myers mentioned that they are acutely aware of how this scandal affects their standing.
Following Andrew’s banishment, significant developments unfolded. The U.S. Department of Justice released a batch of documents related to Epstein on January 30, leading to further fallout for Andrew. Not only was he relocated from his home at Royal Lodge, but he was also arrested at Wood Farm on his 66th birthday on February 19. Although he has not faced charges, Andrew is under investigation for allegedly leaking classified information during his tenure as a U.K. trade envoy from 2001 to 2011.
Royal commentator Phil Dampier remarked that William is keenly aware of how Andrew’s situation impacts the monarchy’s reputation. "It’s often said that William is the driving force, encouraging the King to act decisively regarding Andrew," he noted, while also showing concern for Andrew’s mental well-being during this turbulent period. Dampier concluded that William hopes to see a resolution to the issues surrounding Andrew by the time he ascends the throne.
