Police Chase Concludes with Arrest in Riverside County Community
Colton Police Arrest Driver After Lengthy Pursuit
A police chase that began Saturday morning in Colton culminated in a dramatic arrest in a Redlands neighborhood after nearly 50 minutes on the run. Authorities reported that the driver, identified as Matthew Rodriguez, exhibited erratic behavior during the pursuit.
Video footage captured by a freelance photographer shows officers subduing Rodriguez near the intersection of University Street and Lalania Avenue before placing him under arrest.
The pursuit, which started around 11 a.m. near North Grand Avenue and West Olive Street, began when officers attempted to pull over a red Honda Civic. Rodriguez allegedly refused to stop, leading police on a lengthy chase through local streets, during which he ran several red lights, drove against traffic, and even rammed a patrol vehicle.
In a statement, the Colton Police Department noted, “While officers were attempting to place Rodriguez under arrest, Rodriguez actively resisted. Officers deployed their TASER, which was ineffective, causing officers to use alternative force options, including the use of a baton, punches, and knee strikes.” Footage from the arrest shows three officers surrounding Rodriguez, with one officer using a baton and another applying a knee to his torso while the others restrained him.
Neighbors described the scene as unusual for the area. “I’ve never really seen something like this,” said resident Cyrus Kazemi, while Albert Aguilar remarked, “That kind of stuff doesn’t happen here. Up on the freeway, maybe, but not here. It’s unusual.”
Authorities also revealed that Rodriguez is a documented gang member. Earlier this month, he was suspected of shooting and killing his family’s dog. During the arrest, officers discovered that he was in possession of stolen mail.
Following the pursuit, Colton police announced that the actions of the officers involved are currently under investigation.
