PinkPantheress has collaborated with MJ Cole to release a new rendition of his UK Garage classic “Sincere.”
Originally launched in 1998, “Sincere” is recognized as a key track in the UK Garage genre, frequently featured in DJ sets and compilations. The song debuted at No. 38 on the U.K. Singles Chart, climbing to No. 13 following a re-release in 2000.
The new version, titled “Still Sincere,” released under 892 Recordings/Platoon, showcases PinkPantheress in the main vocal role, replacing the original sample-based vocals.
Expressing her excitement about the project, PinkPantheress stated, “I’m so thrilled I got to work with MJ Cole on this remix. He’s honestly a garage legend and it’s kinda surreal collaborating with someone whose legacy inspired bits of my early work.”
Emerging from London’s club scene in the ‘90s and early 2000s, Garage music merged influences from house, R&B, and dub to create a distinctive sound. Notable artists like So Solid Crew, Artful Dodger, and Craig David achieved significant success on the UK Singles Chart during this era.
Born in 2001, PinkPantheress has cited the UK Garage scene as a major influence on her music. Her 2021 single “Pain” sampled the track “Flowers” by Sweet Female Attitude. In a discussion with NPR, she noted, “I think the reason [UK Garage] is so popular in the UK is that they’re super palatable and you can play them anywhere and everyone will know the lyrics.”
MJ Cole rose to prominence after the original release of “Sincere.” His debut album, also titled Sincere, received nominations for both the Mercury Prize and the BRIT Awards. He has since produced music for a range of artists, including Dizzee Rascal and Katy B, and has remixed tracks for notable names such as Amy Winehouse, Mariah Carey, and Alicia Keys.
