Pete Chiarelli is Working on a New Charlie’s Angels Movie for Sony
Sony is set to revive the Charlie’s Angels franchise once more, although details surrounding the latest installment—such as the storyline and its production team—remain undisclosed. The previous effort, released in 2019 and featuring a script and direction by Elizabeth Banks, along with stars Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska, struggled at the box office.
The Charlie’s Angels franchise began with the iconic 1970s ABC series, which followed a trio of female private investigators portrayed by Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith. Created by Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts, and produced by Aaron Spelling, the show became a cultural landmark during its five-season run from 1976 to 1981.
Sony first brought the franchise to film in 2000 with a successful action movie starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu. Directed by McG, this adaptation was a box office success, grossing over $264 million globally and leading to a sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, in 2003. Before Banks’ recent attempt, a 2011 revival on ABC featuring Annie Ilonzeh, Minka Kelly, and Rachael Taylor was short-lived, ending after only a few episodes.
