Penélope Cruz, Kieran Culkin, Jude Law, Emma Mackey, and Owen Wilson Close to Joining Nancy Meyers’ Latest Film at Warner Bros.
Nancy Meyers is set to direct her next feature film at Warner Bros, marking her first directorial project in 11 years. This development comes after the studio took the project in turnaround from Netflix, where it had previously been slated to premiere. Meyers is well-known for her previous work, including the 2015 comedy The Intern, featuring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro.
The film, which has not yet been titled, will retain its original stars, Oscar winners Penélope Cruz and Owen Wilson, with Kieran Culkin, Jude Law, and Emma Mackey also in talks to join the cast. Warner Bros has scheduled a theatrical release for December 25, 2027. Meyers also penned the screenplay, though details regarding the plot remain undisclosed.
The project was initially set to proceed with Netflix, featuring negotiations with Cruz and Michael Fassbender to join Wilson and Cruz. However, the estimated budget of $130 million to $150 million proved prohibitive for Netflix, leading to its cancellation. Warner Bros took over shortly after, with the intention of producing the film at a significantly lower cost. Adam Driver had briefly considered joining the cast before committing to Heat 2, directed by Michael Mann.
Cruz, represented by CAA, Untitled, and Kuranda, gained acclaim for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, for which she won an Oscar in 2009, and has since received three additional nominations for Volver, Nine, and Parallel Mothers. Her recent work includes Ferrari, directed by Mann, and the upcoming Warner Bros release The Bride!, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Kieran Culkin, represented by WME and Brookside Artist Management, earned an Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe for A Real Pain last year, along with an Emmy and Golden Globe for HBO’s Succession. His filmography includes Igby Goes Down, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and No Sudden Move.
Jude Law, also a Golden Globe nominee, has earned accolades including a BAFTA and Oscar nominations for The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain. His numerous film credits include The Order, Sherlock Holmes, and the upcoming Netflix series Black Rabbit, with representation from CAA, Julian Belfrage Associates, Jackoway Austen, and Pippa Beng.
Emma Mackey is recognized for her role as Maeve Wiley in Sex Education and for portraying Emily Brontë in Emily. She recently starred in James L. Brooks’ dramedy Ella McCay and has upcoming projects including A24’s Peaked and Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Narnia for Netflix. Mackey is represented by CAA, Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole, and Ziffren Brittenham.
Owen Wilson has received an Oscar nomination for co-writing The Royal Tenenbaums and features prominently in the Meet the Parents franchise and its upcoming sequel, Focker In-Law. He also stars in Apple TV’s Stick and Disney+/Marvel’s Loki. Wilson’s extensive filmography includes collaborations with Wes Anderson in The French Dispatch, Bottle Rocket, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Life Aquatic, and he is represented by UTA and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof + Fishman LLP.
Currently, there are no other wide releases scheduled for Christmas Day 2027, though the Meyers film will debut following Warner Bros/New Line’s The Hunt for Gollum and Disney/Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17.
