Paul McCartney Ends Season 51 of ‘SNL’ with a Memorable Third Performance
Will Ferrell celebrated his sixth hosting appearance on Saturday Night Live last night, solidifying his status among the show’s elite alumni. However, it was musical guest Paul McCartney who captivated audiences, concluding both the episode and Season 51 with an unexpected encore.
As the episode neared its conclusion, viewers spotted Colin Jost, Weekend Update co-anchor and Pete Hegseth impersonator, stepping onto the stage in a bald cap. In a surprise move, McCartney returned to the stage to rally the band for a final performance of “Coming Up,” the lead track from his 1980 album McCartney II.
Throughout the extended goodbye segment, the cast could be seen enjoying themselves, dancing in the forefront as the show ran over its allotted time.
Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who had earlier made a cameo by interrupting Ferrell’s monologue, also appeared in the finale’s performance. McCartney had joined Ferrell in a comedic sketch earlier in the night, where Ferrell jokingly referred to him as the “cute one” while addressing audience questions.
The sketch, titled “What It Feels Like Talking to a Mechanic,” featured McCartney as chief mechanic Nigel alongside Ferrell, Marcello Hernández, and Mikey Day. The humor centered on the increasingly absurd jargon used by the mechanics, with McCartney delivering lines that included, “Your tipsy-wipsy’s all dangly-doodly, and the spiggly-wiggly’s gone crumpet. The whole car is knackered.”
McCartney concluded his performance with a witty remark about the vehicle’s condition, stating, “Plus, the steering wheel’s on the wrong bloody side.”
