Pasadena Shooting Involves Officer and Suspect During Attempted Assault
Pasadena, CA — A man attempted to sexually assault a woman near the Sierra Madre Villa Metro station, resulting in a tragic shooting incident that left both an armed suspect and a police officer injured. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Malcolm Buchanan, reportedly shot a bystander who intervened in the assault before engaging in a gunfight with police.
On Friday, the Pasadena Police Department released body camera footage associated with the officer-involved shooting that occurred on March 2. The recordings provide a detailed account of the chaotic events that unfolded that night.
Emergency services responded to reports of a shooting at the Metro station. Video from an officer’s body camera reveals a wounded man on the ground, bleeding from his right shoulder while the officer called for medical assistance. According to a witness, the injured man attempted to help her as Buchanan sought to carry out the assault.
After receiving a description of the suspect, police located a man matching that description a few blocks away. Body camera footage captured the moment an officer instructed the suspect to drop a bag. The suspect fled on foot, prompting a chase. During this pursuit, he turned and opened fire on the officer, who returned fire.
The gunfire resulted in injuries to the officer, who fell and reported the incident over the radio. A secondary officer, trailing behind, recorded the intense exchange as he tended to his colleague. Efforts were also made to provide aid to Buchanan, who ultimately succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Law enforcement later confirmed that he was on active parole for armed robbery and that the firearm used in the incident was reported stolen.
The name of the injured officer has not been disclosed. He was shot in the right leg and taken to Huntington Hospital for treatment.
The Pasadena Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Individuals with information about the incident are encouraged to contact the department at 626-744-4241, while anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
