Palisades High Students Perform on Stage for the First Time Since the January 2025 Wildfires
Palisades Charter High School Students Take the Stage for the First Time Since Wildfires
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. – After enduring the challenges brought on by devastating wildfires last January, students at Palisades Charter High School are returning to the stage. The school’s production of the musical "Rent" marks a poignant moment, as it is their first performance since the catastrophe.
In a warm embrace of creativity and resilience, music fills the halls of Palisades Charter High School, echoing themes of hope and community recovery. "This is our return to Pali; this is our first show back on campus," stated Cheri Smith, the theater and dance instructor. Smith, who brought a wealth of experience to the project as a former member of the Broadway national tour of "Rent," expressed her gratitude for the opportunity. "I’m fortunate to have been able to bring in that experience with our students here," she remarked.
For students like Ella White, a senior who lost her home in the fire, participating in the production has been a healing process. "For me, it’s been a really cathartic experience," she shared. White emphasized the sense of belonging that rehearsal provides, saying, "It just feels like we’re one big family, and I’m honestly happiest when I’m at rehearsal."
The musical, set in New York City’s East Village, provides a fitting backdrop for the students, who have been deeply involved in the rebuilding of their production. After the wildfires stripped away much of their resources, students contributed to everything from set design to costume creation. "We had lost everything — all of our sets and props and costumes," noted Smith.
Reflecting on the experience, Avery Anderson, another student, expressed how the chance to return to the stage was uplifting. "It was very somber, but getting the news that we were going to get to come back here was everything," she said.
As Palisades Charter High School continues to rebuild, the bonds formed during this production have strengthened the community. Anderson remarked on the unity fostered through their collective efforts, stating, "This show just brings everybody together, and it’s such a strong-knit group, and we’re all just working hard, and we all just want everybody to enjoy it."
The opening of "Rent" signals not only a return to normalcy but also a celebration of resilience for the students and their community.
