Orange Lutheran Triumphs Over Norco in Boras Classic South Championship
Orange Lutheran Secures Top Spot in Southern California High School Baseball Midseason Rankings
Orange Lutheran High School’s baseball team, boasting a record of 12-3, has claimed the title of the number one team in Southern California as the midseason rankings emerge. The Lancers clinched this prestigious position after completing a four-game sweep at the Boras Classic South, culminating in a 4-1 victory over Norco in the championship game.
Throughout the tournament, Orange Lutheran showcased extraordinary pitching depth, which was pivotal to their success. Ricardo Hurtado contributed significantly with a single and a home run, while Brady Murrietta added two hits. Starting pitcher Blake Killinger delivered an impressive performance, allowing just five hits and one run over 5⅓ innings. Norco’s standout player, Jacob Melendez, hit his fourth home run since gaining eligibility on March 27.
This season, Orange Lutheran has not only triumphed at the Boras Classic South but also at the National High School Invitational in North Carolina, marking a remarkable achievement of winning two prestigious tournaments in a single year. As a result, there are expectations that the Southern Section’s computer rankings will reflect this accomplishment, though the Lancers were ranked No. 51 in this week’s Southern Section power rankings.
Looking ahead, Orange Lutheran will face St. Mary’s, the Northern California champion, next Saturday in the Boras Classic championship game at Santa Clara University.
In other notable games across the region, Corona triumphed over Newport Harbor 7-5, thanks to a five-run fourth inning, and Los Osos rallied past JSerra 4-3, overcoming a 3-0 deficit. A series of competitive matchups saw St. John Bosco edge out Fountain Valley 2-1, while Ayala defeated Gahr 6-4, with Easton Sarmiento contributing two hits, including a home run.
In the softball arena, Orange Lutheran dominated Huntington Beach with an 11-0 victory, highlighting Rylee Silver’s outstanding performance that included three hits and six strikeouts in five scoreless innings.
