Olivia Rodrigo Shares Her Joy of Having Tea with Harry Styles After Writing Fan Fiction About Him as a Kid
Olivia Rodrigo Reflects on Meeting Harry Styles and Finds Inspiration in Music
During a recent appearance on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s podcast Music Makes Us, Olivia Rodrigo shared her excitement about meeting Harry Styles, an encounter steeped in personal significance. The 22-year-old singer recounted how she once wrote fan fiction about One Direction in elementary school, saying, “Many years later, I hung out with Harry Styles, and we got tea, and we walked around."
In a moment of astonishment, Rodrigo reflected on the encounter, stating, "I got home, and I was like, ‘What the f—?’ I feel like I wrote that in a fan fiction, and now I’ve lived it. That is so crazy how that can happen in your life." She described Styles as "so sweet," humorously adding that if she could tell her 10-year-old self about this future interaction, she would have responded skeptically, "Shut the f— up, you’re lying."
Rodrigo originally mentioned her enjoyment of Styles fan fiction in a cover story with Vogue earlier this year.
Elsewhere in the podcast, she discussed the music that inspires her. The singer revealed that she often turns to Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill when feeling uncertain about her artistry. "For some reason that album, just like, every part of what makes a human being a human being, it feels like it’s encapsulated in that record," she explained.
Rodrigo appreciates the balance of "anger and spite and jealousy" with "joy and hope" in Morissette’s work, adding, “I f—ing love that album as everyone on the planet does but I just think, it reminds me what I’m trying to go after."
She admires Morissette’s authenticity, noting, "As a writer that’s always like the most inspiring thing when you just feel like someone just needed to say something."
In November, Rodrigo performed "We’re Going to Be Friends" at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation in tribute to the White Stripes, continuing her journey in the music world.
