Ólafur Darri Ólafsson Cast as Drago in Universal’s Live-Action Adaptation of ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2’
Dean DeBlois Set to Direct New ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Sequel
Dean DeBlois will return to write, direct, and executive produce the next installment in the beloved How to Train Your Dragon franchise, furthering the story of Hiccup and Toothless.
Produced by Marc Platt of Marc Platt Productions, alongside President Adam Siegel, the film is scheduled to release on June 11, 2027. Lexi Barta, Senior Vice President of Production, will oversee the project for Universal Pictures.
The franchise, which has captivated audiences through four successful films, has grossed over $2.2 billion, showcasing the remarkable bond between Hiccup and the Night Fury dragon, Toothless. Fans can expect some familiar voices, as returning actors include Gerard Butler and Cate Blanchett. New to the cast is Ólafsson, who will portray the villain Drago, a role previously voiced by Djimon Honsou.
Since its debut in 2010, How to Train Your Dragon has garnered critical acclaim, earning four Academy Award nominations and a Golden Globe for the second film. The series is based on the popular book series by Cressida Cowell.
The first live-action adaptation, which Universal released in 2025, achieved a notable global box office of $636.4 million, marking it as the franchise’s largest success to date.
Currently, Ólafsson appears in projects such as Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue and Severance Season 2. His upcoming roles include 121212, a heist series for Apple TV+, and A Winter’s Journey for Sony Pictures Classics. Additionally, he will star in and executive produce Reykjavík Fusion, developed through his production hub, ACT4.
Ólafsson’s past television credits feature notable series, including the Golden Globe-nominated The Missing and True Detective. In film, he has appeared in titles like Eurovision and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
