Oaks Christian Girls’ Water Polo Team: Leading the Way in Excellence
Oaks Christian Triumphs Over Mater Dei in Water Polo Showdown
Oaks Christian, the reigning champion of the Southern Section Open Division in girls’ water polo, solidified its status as a top contender by defeating previously unbeaten Mater Dei 11-7 last week.
With a record of 10-1, the Lions are considered one of four elite teams vying for the title, alongside Mater Dei, Orange Lutheran, and Newport Harbor. “Four teams are capable of beating anyone any time,” remarked coach Jack Kocur, highlighting the competitive nature of the division.
Oaks Christian’s only defeat this season came at the hands of Newport Harbor, although they managed to secure a victory against them as well. The Lions currently hold the No. 1 spot in the latest Southern Section rankings.
Under Kocur’s leadership, the team has seen five players commit to college programs: Alex Stoddard (Princeton), Mia Fabros (Stanford), Nicole O’Neill (USC), Maryam Maamoun (Brown), and Aaliyah Kim (Hawaii). Additionally, junior standout Makena Bygrave, who scored four goals against Mater Dei, is regarded as one of the top players from the class of 2027.
A significant tournament in girls’ water polo is slated for this weekend at Santa Barbara High, further adding excitement to the competitive season.
