North Hollywood’s TUMO Center Sees Rapid Growth as Teens Embrace Free Tech Program
Free Tech Education Program Thrives in North Hollywood
LOS ANGELES – A free after-school program in North Hollywood, TUMO Los Angeles, is rapidly gaining traction, significantly altering the educational landscape for local teens.
Since its opening just six months ago, TUMO Los Angeles has reached full capacity, serving approximately 600 students each week. Another 600 students are currently on the waitlist, reflecting the program’s high demand.
Operating in a unique environment, TUMO does not resemble a traditional school. There are no ringing bells or rows of desks; instead, students engage in hands-on learning experiences in fields such as animation, game design, filmmaking, and robotics—all at no cost.
CEO Sawyer Hescock noted, "We’ve been operational for six months… we’re serving 600 students each week… and have a waitlist of a similar number." The program is part of a broader TUMO network that began in Armenia and has expanded into a global initiative focused on providing teens with the tools to explore their creative passions.
"We provide completely free… education in technology and design… and the work students are creating has been phenomenal," Hescock added.
The impact on students is tangible, with many discovering their interests and future career paths. Alyssa, one of the attendees, shared, "I came to TUMO to realize what my passions are… and I discovered I’m really interested in robotics and engineering." Emil echoed this sentiment, stating, "I first came to explore… and now I’m into graphic design, game development, and programming."
TUMO’s mission extends beyond technical skill development; it aims to unlock opportunities for young people. In a city celebrated for its potential, TUMO exemplifies how access to creative education can pave the way for future endeavors.
