Nicholas Hoult Stars in David Leitch’s New Heist Film for Amazon: A Look at “How To Rob A Bank” at CinemaCon
Amazon MGM Studios Unveils First Look at ‘How to Rob a Bank’
Amazon MGM Studios has released a first look at its upcoming heist film, How to Rob a Bank, directed by David Leitch, known for his work on Atomic Blonde and Bullet Train. The film features Nicholas Hoult in a leading role.
At CinemaCon, it was revealed that the plot centers on a group of masked bank robbers who carry out audacious heists while live-streaming their escapades on social media. In the words of co-star Pete Davidson, this approach might not be their smartest move if they aim to avoid capture.
Leitch described the robbers as modern-day Robin Hood figures challenging a corrupt system, pitted against an FBI agent portrayed by John C. Reilly and a hacker played by Zoë Kravitz.
Davidson characterized the action-thriller as “totally f*cking insane.” He joined Leitch on stage in Las Vegas amid a spectacle of motorcyclists in wolf masks, akin to characters in the film, tossing cash into the audience and performing acrobatics.
Footage shown at CinemaCon featured a masked Hoult proclaiming, “the success rate of armed robberies is 90%,” posing the question: if real-world odds are against you, why not take a chance? His character adds, “Let’s make some content!”
Reilly’s character introduces a more serious tone, stating, “15 banks, 61 felonies, 30 million unique viewers. We have the full resources of the federal government, so put some f*cking pepper on it!”
The trailer hints at a critical bank heist, with Reilly and Kravitz predicting that the robbers will target a specific bank for personal reasons. Hoult’s character confronts a banker, played by Christian Slater, with the line, “Your bank killed my son,” suggesting a deeper motive behind their actions.
The script for How to Rob a Bank was penned by Mark Bianculli, known for his work on Hunters and the upcoming Cliffhanger reboot. The film also stars Anna Sawai and Rhenzy Feliz, produced by 87North’s Kelly McCormick and Leitch, alongside Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody, and Allan Mandelbaum, with Bianculli serving as executive producer.
Scheduled for release on September 4, the film will compete with Paramount’s recently acquired crime thriller By Any Means, featuring Mark Wahlberg and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
