New Insights into the Original ‘Home Alone’ Casting: A Look at Potential Stars Like Jimmy Stewart, Susan Sarandon, and Tim Curry
More than 30 years after its release, Home Alone remains a cherished holiday classic, with its iconic cast—most notably the McCallister family and the comedic duo of Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern as the bumbling thieves—firmly etched in the minds of audiences.
Recently revealed casting notes from the Academy Museum shed light on the selection process for this beloved film, directed by Chris Columbus. Archive curator Louise Hilton, from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Margaret Herrick Library, discussed the pool of actors who were seriously considered for roles in the film, including notable names like Susan Sarandon and Jimmy Stewart.
“Can you imagine if Kirstie Alley or Susan Sarandon had played Kate in Home Alone?” Hilton posited during a TikTok presentation, where she showcased casting memos and a shortlist of potential candidates for various roles.
Among the alternatives for the role of Kate, ultimately portrayed by Catherine O’Hara, were Blythe Danner and Joanna Cassidy. The casting process also considered Candice Bergen, though she and Alley were unable to meet the filming schedule.
In the search for the McCallister patriarch, originally cast with John Heard, actors Sam Waterston and David Dukes were also scrutinized. Notably, Danny Aiello opted not to pursue the role.
Hilton also highlighted casting considerations for the character Marley, the older neighbor who comes to the rescue. While Jimmy Stewart was available and his agent expressed interest, the production ultimately went with Robert Blossom for the role. Vincent Gardenia, an Academy Award nominee for Moonstruck, was also shortlisted.
In discussing the infamous duo of Harry and Marv, Hilton noted the deliberation over age dynamics for the characters, stating, “We can go with an older Harry and younger Marv as written, but Tim Curry and Dan Stern make an exciting pair.” The casting notes suggested Joe Pesci’s preference to avoid auditions, raising doubts about his participation; however, he ultimately signed on. Other candidates included Joe Pantoliano and Zack Norman.
Home Alone, created by writer and producer John Hughes, tells the story of 8-year-old Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, who is inadvertently left behind when his family departs for a holiday in Paris. Initially reveling in his independence, Kevin must soon outwit two burglars attempting to invade his home. A blockbuster hit upon its release in 1990, the film has since earned a place in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
