New Forensic Pathologist Series “Truth” Coming Soon to NBC by Dallas Jackson, David Marshall Grant, and Malcolm D. Lee
NBC Develops New Drama Series ‘Truth’ Inspired by Dr. Roger Mitchell Jr.
NBC is moving forward with the development of Truth, a new drama series based on the life of Dr. Roger Mitchell Jr., who made history as the youngest and first Black chief medical examiner in Washington, D.C. The project features talents including Dallas Jackson, David Marshall Grant, and Malcolm D. Lee through his production company, Blackmaled Productions, in collaboration with Universal Television.
Written by Jackson and Grant, Truth follows the character Xavier “Truth” Hall, who takes on the challenging role as the youngest chief medical examiner in a major city. The series highlights Hall’s exceptional medical expertise as he investigates the circumstances of deaths, helping provide closure to families while also addressing personal issues, including his relationship with his estranged, drug-addicted father.
The executive production team includes Jackson, Grant, and Lee, who will also direct. Dominique Telson and Michael Scott Allen are also part of the production team, alongside Mitchell Jr., who serves as a co-executive producer. This series is produced under Lee’s Blackmaled Productions and Universal Television.
Dallas Jackson is known for his work as the writer and director of Thriller and Welcome to Sudden Death. He has also executive produced ABC’s Rebel and secured a series with Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson’s G-Unit Film and Television. Jackson’s representation includes Industry Entertainment and Verve, among others.
David Marshall Grant has an extensive background as a writer and executive producer for shows such as Brothers and Sisters, Nashville, and A Million Little Things. He recently co-wrote the film Spoiler Alert and is developing another project alongside the James Patterson Company. Grant is represented by Innovative Artists Entertainment and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
Malcolm D. Lee is recognized for directing films like The Best Man franchise and Girls Trip. Currently, he is working on the spy procedural Need to Know and a television adaptation of Ellen Won Steil’s novel Becoming Marlowe Fin. Lee is also cultivating new projects, including a feature film slated for 2026. His representation includes IAG and Del Shaw Moonves.
Dr. Roger Mitchell Jr. is a board-certified forensic pathologist with two decades of experience. He has previously served as Chief Medical Examiner for Washington, D.C., and recently held the position of President at Howard University Hospital. He co-authored the book Death in Custody: How America Ignores the Truth and What We Can Do About It and co-hosts the NAACP Image Awards-nominated podcast Official Ignorance – The Death in Custody Podcast. Mitchell Jr. is represented by IAG.
Truth promises to bring real-life challenges and complexities to the forefront, exploring themes of mortality, family, and social justice.
