New Cast Announced for Netflix’s Scooby-Doo Series: Tanner Hagen as Shaggy, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma, Maxwell Jenkins as Fred, and Mckenna Grace as Daphne
Netflix Casts Key Roles for Upcoming Scooby-Doo Live-Action Series
Netflix has officially cast the principal characters for its live-action reimagining of the classic animated series, Scooby-Doo. Tanner Hagen will take on the iconic role of Shaggy Rogers, while Abby Ryder Fortson is set to portray Velma Dinkley. Maxwell Jenkins will play Fred Jones. They will join Mckenna Grace, who has already been cast as Daphne Blake.
This announcement concludes an extensive search for the leading roles in the series, which aims to explore the origins of Mystery Inc. and how the beloved gang, along with their famous canine, first came together. The project is a collaboration among Midnight Radio, Berlanti Productions, and Warner Bros. Television.
The series is written by Midnight Radio’s Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, based on characters created by Hanna-Barbera. It presents an origin story detailing how the group formed to tackle the mysterious case that initiated their adventures.
Set during their final summer at camp, the storyline involves long-time friends Shaggy and Daphne who become entangled in a haunting mystery involving a lonely Great Dane puppy, believed to be a witness to a supernatural murder. They are joined by the practical Velma and the charismatic newcomer Freddy as they navigate a creepy mystery that threatens to unveil their deepest secrets.
Appelbaum and Rosenberg will serve as showrunners for the series, while André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner will executive produce through Midnight Radio. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman are also attached as executive producers under Berlanti Productions’ deal with Warner Bros. Television. Toby Haynes is set to direct the first episode and will also serve as an executive producer. Warner Bros. Television is the studio producing the series.
While this marks the first live-action series for Scooby-Doo, the franchise previously saw success with a live-action film released in 2002, featuring Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, and Linda Cardellini as Velma. This film led to a sequel in 2004.
