New Alex Delaware Series Based on Books in Development at Amazon MGM Studios by Writer Jennifer Johnson
Amazon MGM Studios to Adapt Jonathan Kellerman’s Alex Delaware Series for Television
Amazon MGM Studios is moving forward with a television adaptation of Jonathan Kellerman’s acclaimed psychological crime series, Alex Delaware. The studio has secured the rights to all 41 novels in the series, with Jennifer Johnson, known for her work on Washington Black, taking on the roles of writer and executive producer.
The adaptation is expected to begin with When the Bough Breaks, the first book in the series, published in 1985.
The Alex Delaware novels center around a highly skilled but reluctant Los Angeles psychologist, Alex Delaware, who collaborates with LAPD detective Milo Sturgis to investigate intricate and often unsettling murder cases. The duo uses psychological insight to decipher the minds, motives, and hidden histories behind the crimes.
Alongside Johnson, Michael Rosenberg, a producer with credits including Hung, will also serve as an executive producer. The project is backed by Audible, with Amazon MGM Studios overseeing the production.
Efforts to adapt the Alex Delaware series for television have been made in the past, including attempts by Fox and IDW Entertainment over the last decade. The series aligns with Prime Video’s lineup of crime-thriller dramas, which features popular titles such as the Bosch franchise and Cross.
Jennifer Johnson is also attached as an executive producer for Amazon MGM Studios and Outlier Society’s upcoming series set in the Creed universe, titled Delphi. She boasts a rich portfolio of previous projects, including Hulu’s Washington Black and ABC’s Designated Survivor. Johnson’s notable achievements also extend to Cold Case, Lost, and Alcatraz. She is represented by WME, Untitled Entertainment, and Johnson Shapior Slewett & Kole.
Rosenberg, who has held significant positions in various entertainment companies, has produced several successful series, including Skins and Hell on Wheels.
Kellerman, a clinical psychologist himself, has penned over 50 crime novels. In addition to the Alex Delaware series, his works include titles such as The Butcher’s Theater, Twisted, and The Murderer’s Daughter. Collaborating with his wife, Faye Kellerman, and son, Jesse Kellerman, he has co-authored multiple projects, further expanding his literary impact in the genre.
