Netflix Picks Up New Psychosexual Drama ‘The Decorator’ by Cody Behan and Stacey Sher
Netflix Secures Rights to ‘The Decorator’ Amidst Competition from 11 Bidders
In a competitive bid involving 11 contenders, Netflix has successfully acquired The Decorator, a drama series based on a short story by Cody Behan, known for his work on Tyrant. Behan is currently adapting the narrative, which is in development, and will serve as executive producer alongside Stacey Sher, celebrated for her role in Django Unchained.
While specific plot details remain undisclosed, the series is described as a psychosexual drama set within the high-stakes environment of luxury interior design in Los Angeles.
Behan’s short story garnered significant interest when it entered the television marketplace in January, becoming one of the standout projects this year. Following a detailed selection process, Netflix secured the project and has committed to a 20-week writers’ room, according to industry sources.
This acquisition is part of a broader trend at Netflix, which has recently added several competitive television projects to its slate. Notable recent additions include Next Door, starring Tessa Thompson, as well as straight-to-series orders for So Far Gone, from writer Mark Bomback, Joshua Zetumer’s Pagans, Black Hole inspired by Charles Burns’ graphic novels, Rabbit, Rabbit featuring Adam Driver, and Trigger Point, starring Joel Edgerton.
Behan’s screenplay for The Diamond As Big As The Ritz, adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story, made its mark on the 2019 Black List and is now in development as a series with Warner Bros. Television, produced by David E. Kelley. Additionally, Behan has co-written the story for an upcoming Amazon MGM Studios thriller, Tyrant, which features Julia Garner and Charlize Theron. He has also adapted his short story Saltwater Cowboys into a feature for Amazon Studios, with Gore Verbinski producing and Miles Teller cast as the lead. Behan is represented by CAA and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
Stacey Sher holds a first-look television deal with FX Productions and 20th Television. She executive produced the acclaimed 2020 FX limited series Mrs. America, which received 10 Emmy nominations. Recently, Sher produced Chris Pine’s directorial debut Poolman, featuring a star-studded cast that includes Pine, Danny DeVito, and Annette Bening. Furthermore, she is currently producing Amazon MGM Studios’ erotic thriller Verity, directed by Michael Showalter and starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett. Sher is also represented by CAA and Gang Tyre Ramer.
