Netflix Leaders Calm Team in Town Hall After Decision to Let Warner Bros. Go to Paramount
Netflix Town Hall Addresses Decision to Withdraw from Warner Bros. Acquisition
In a town hall meeting held on Friday morning, Netflix co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters spoke to employees following the news that the company would not be purchasing Warner Bros. as previously contemplated. The gathering, which lasted 15 to 20 minutes and was moderated by Chief Communications Officer Dani Dudeck, did not feature a Q&A session.
During their remarks, Sarandos and Peters expressed confidence in their decision to forgo the acquisition. Sources indicate that they outlined their rationale, stating they had established a financial threshold for the storied studio. When the Warner Bros. Discovery board suggested a higher price, supported by a competing offer from Paramount, Netflix promptly declined to match it. The executives emphasized that their due diligence reaffirmed that extending negotiations beyond the established price point was unnecessary.
Clarifying their stance, Sarandos and Peters reiterated their previous message to Warner Bros. Discovery, asserting that acquiring the studio was always a “nice to have” at the right price, rather than a “must have” at any cost.
Looking ahead, the executives conveyed optimism about Netflix’s trajectory and the positive momentum expected to carry the company through 2030, a significant milestone year for the platform. They expressed gratitude to employees, particularly those who had devoted time to integration efforts related to the potential acquisition, encouraging them to refocus on their ongoing projects.
While the decision to withdraw was made with careful consideration, it did not come without disappointment, particularly for Sarandos, who had been vocal about his desire for the Warner Bros. acquisition. In the weeks leading up to the decision, he engaged in a publicity campaign to advocate for Netflix, even attending meetings in Washington D.C. regarding the deal when news of the rejected proposal emerged on Thursday.
This town hall, scheduled on short notice after Warner Bros. Discovery announced its "superior offer" from Paramount, marked the second gathering of its kind for Netflix this week, with a regular quarterly town hall held just days prior.
Reaction among Netflix staff to the acquisition’s collapse appears mixed, with many reportedly taken aback by the decision. “The office was quiet yesterday,” noted one employee, summarizing the mood following the announcement.
