Netflix Announces Premiere Date for Jack Thorne’s Adaptation of ‘Lord of the Flies’
Lord of the Flies will premiere on Netflix on May 4.
Last month, it was confirmed that Netflix secured the U.S. rights to this anticipated series, which is written by Jack Thorne and produced by Sony Pictures Television, outpacing numerous other contenders.
The limited series, co-produced by the BBC and Stan, adapts William Golding’s classic 1954 novel. It unfolds the tale of a group of boys stranded on a tropical island who attempt to maintain civility under Ralph’s (Winston Sawyers) leadership, supported by the intellectual Piggy (David McKenna). However, Jack (Lox Pratt) emerges as a rival leader, diverting the group’s path from hope to chaos.
The four-hour production features an ensemble cast, including Ike Talbut, Thomas Connor, twins Noah and Cassius Flemyng, Cornelius Brandreth, and Tom Page-Turner, along with more than 30 boys portraying the camp’s “biguns” and “littluns.”

Produced by Sony Pictures Television, Eleven, and One Shoe Films, the series is directed by Marc Munden, with music composed by Oscar winners Hans Zimmer, Kara Talve, and Cristobal Tapia de Veer. Joel Wilson and Jamie Campbell serve as executive producers for Eleven, while Thorne and Munden also hold executive producer roles. Notably, Wilson and Campbell recently departed from Eleven after two decades.
This marks the first television adaptation of Golding’s influential work, although it has been adapted into film several times, including a version by Peter Brook in 1963, a Filipino survival film in 1975, and another adaptation in 1990 directed by Harry Hook.
Lord of the Flies is part of a broader array of international titles set to join Netflix’s U.S. lineup. Upcoming original series include Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, the Nordic noir adaptation of Nesbø’s novels, as well as The Empress Season 3, Lupin Part 4, and Quasimodo.
