Nearly All Los Angeles Supervisors Support Karen Bass for Re-Election
Four Los Angeles County Supervisors Endorse Mayor Karen Bass for Re-Election
In a significant boost for her campaign, four members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors have officially endorsed Mayor Karen Bass for re-election, Bass’ campaign announced on Friday. Supervisors Hilda Solis, Holly Mitchell, Janice Hahn, and Kathryn Barger praised Bass as a "trailblazer" and the ideal leader for fostering collaboration between the city and county.
The longstanding alliances between these supervisors and Bass, who previously served as a congresswoman and community organizer, underscore their collective commitment to addressing key issues facing Los Angeles.
Notably absent from the list of endorsers is Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, who joined the board in 2022 after her term as mayor of West Hollywood. Horvath was previously endorsed by Bass’ predecessor, Eric Garcetti, but did not show support for the incumbent’s campaign.
Horvath contemplated entering the mayoral race until the last moment before the February filing deadline but ultimately chose to withdraw, stating she made the decision after “much prayer and many honest conversations” with close allies.
While Horvath has yet to disclose her preferred candidate, many speculate her support may lean toward LA City Councilwoman Nithya Raman, who declared her candidacy on the filing deadline. Raman stated her motivation for running stems from a perceived "wall of reluctance" within City Hall regarding urgent issues.
Bass acknowledged the surprise of facing a challenge from Raman, emphasizing their previous collaboration on homelessness. "We have been great allies, and I will look forward to working with Nithya Raman in my second term," Bass remarked last month.
Despite gaining endorsements from several prominent figures, including Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, Bass faces a challenging re-election landscape. A recent Emerson College/Inside California Politics poll revealed that only 24% of Los Angeles voters approved of Bass’ performance, while 47% disapproved. Additionally, 50.9% of voters remain undecided about their choice for the next mayor.
Among voters who have made up their minds, nearly 20% currently support Bass, with over 10% favoring Spence Pratt, a conservative reality TV personality, and just over 9% backing Raman.
Two other notable figures have also opted out of the mayoral race. Former Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Austin Beutner withdrew following the tragic death of his 22-year-old daughter, Emily, emphasizing the need to prioritize his family during this difficult time. Meanwhile, billionaire developer Rick Caruso, who previously faced Bass in the 2022 election, ruled out another run after considering the possibility earlier this year.
