Nathan Fillion Confirms New ‘Firefly’ Animated Series Featuring Original Cast and Concept Art
Firefly Animated Series in Development with Original Cast
Fans of the beloved series Firefly have reason to celebrate as Nathan Fillion announced the development of an animated reboot during a recent panel in Washington, D.C. The live taping of his podcast, Once We Were Spacemen, featured several co-stars including Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau, all of whom are expected to reprise their roles. Adam Baldwin, known for his portrayal of Jayne Cobb, will also lend his voice to the project.
The animated reboot is being crafted under Fillion’s production company, Collision33, in collaboration with 20th Television Animation, which holds the rights to the franchise.
Showrunners Marc Guggenheim, recognized for his work on Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow, and Tara Butters, known for Agent Carter and Reaper, are set to lead the project, with a completed script already in hand. Notably, Joss Whedon, the original creator, is not associated with this new endeavor.
This upcoming series is positioned in the timeline between the original 2002 show and its 2005 film, Serenity, aiming to expand the universe while maintaining continuity with the established lore. Concept art has been developed in collaboration with the Oscar and Emmy-winning animation studio ShadowMachine, and the package is expected to be pitched to buyers soon.
The announcement follows a week-long social media campaign that sparked interest among fans, drawing significant views and discussions around Fillion’s activities.
This news arrives shortly after the confirmation that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, also created by Whedon, will not move forward at Hulu.
Originally created by Whedon and produced by 20th Century Fox Television, Firefly aired for just one season but gained a devoted following through DVD sales, streaming avenues, and the subsequent film Serenity. The series chronicled the adventures of a renegade crew aboard the transport ship Serenity in the year 2517.
Fillion and Tudyk’s affection for Firefly inspired the launch of their podcast, which has become a hit among fans, allowing the duo to reconnect with former cast members and industry creatives.
In 2024, Fillion established Collision33 alongside his manager, Michelle Chapman, securing a first-look deal with Lionsgate. The company is also behind The Rookie, starring Fillion, along with its upcoming spinoff, The Rookie: North. Additionally, Collision33 has partnered with Dark Horse Comics to develop an original comic series titled Witness Point.
In addition to his ongoing work in The Rookie, Fillion recently portrayed Guy Gardner/Green Lantern in Warner Bros.’ Superman and is slated to reprise the role in HBO’s upcoming series Lanterns. He is also widely recognized for his leading role in ABC’s hit series Castle.
The development of this animated series is poised to reignite the passion of Firefly fans while bringing the franchise to a new generation.
