Nate Bargatze Takes on the Challenges of Fatherhood in His First Leading Role in ‘The Breadwinner’ Trailer
TriStar Pictures has released a new trailer for The Breadwinner, a family comedy that marks the first leading film role for comedian Nate Bargatze.
Directed by Eric Appel, known for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, the film features Mandy Moore as Bargatze’s on-screen wife, Katie. In a twist of fate, Katie’s successful deal on Shark Tank leads Nate’s character, traditionally the family breadwinner, to take on the role of a stay-at-home dad, which soon spirals into a chaotic experience.
The couple’s children, portrayed by Stella Grace Fitzgerald, Birdie Borria, and Charlotte Ann Tucker, initially demonstrate skepticism about their father’s capabilities, with one child lamenting, “We’re all going to die.”
In an early exchange, Tucker’s character asks, “Dad, are you mom now?” to which Bargatze’s character affirms.

The trailer showcases a series of humorous misadventures, beginning with a car accident that leads to the explosion of his daughter’s model volcano. Nate’s character also faces various domestic challenges, including dealing with his daughters’ antics and the chaos that arises from night chores and clogged toilets.
Reflecting on his newfound responsibilities, Nate comments, “I don’t know how Katie does it. My feet hurt, my back hurts. She makes it look so easy. This has been the hardest I’ve ever worked in my life.”
The Breadwinner is set to premiere on May 29, competing against several notable releases, including A24’s horror film Backrooms, Focus Features/StudioCanal’s D-Day thriller Pressure, Black Bear’s crime film Tuner, and Lionsgate’s action thriller The Furious.
The screenplay for The Breadwinner was co-written by Bargatze and Dan Lagana, with production led by Jeremy Latcham through Wonder Project. The trailer can be viewed through various platforms.
