Mookie Betts Heads to IL as Hyeseong Kim Joins the Dodgers; Sunday Game Delayed by Rain
Dodgers Place Mookie Betts on Injured List with Oblique Strain
WASHINGTON — The Los Angeles Dodgers have announced that shortstop Mookie Betts will be placed on the injured list due to a strained right oblique. Manager Dave Roberts confirmed the decision Sunday morning and indicated that Hyeseong Kim will be recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to fill the vacancy.
“I felt a little more reassured today,” Roberts said after speaking with Betts, who visited his office shortly before the announcement. Dressed in travel attire and carrying several bags, Betts reported feeling better than anticipated.
Roberts detailed that Betts experienced discomfort while rounding the bases after scoring on a Freddie Freeman double during Saturday’s game. The team’s current assessment suggests he may have strained the muscle during a check swing in his only at-bat of that game.
In light of Betts’ absence, Kim is expected to share shortstop duties with Miguel Rojas, who was listed as the starting shortstop for Sunday’s game. Roberts acknowledged the challenge of restructuring his lineup without Betts, noting that right fielder Kyle Tucker, typically batting behind leadoff hitter Shohei Ohtani, was set for a scheduled day off.
“I haven’t thought through that,” Roberts admitted. “I might have some time before today’s game starts to do that.”
The Dodgers faced their own weather-related delays, as a rainstorm prompted officials to announce a delay to the day’s game against the Nationals, though a new start time has yet to be announced.
