Mini Piano Olympics: Celebrating 25 Talented Young Pianists from 13 Countries
Fourth American International Paderewski Piano Competition Set to Showcase Young Talent in Los Angeles
The Fourth American International Paderewski Piano Competition, a prestigious event likened to a "mini Piano Olympics," is poised to highlight the talents of 25 young pianists aged 16 to 30 from 13 countries. Hosted on a 9-foot Steinway Model D—used for performances at the Walt Disney Concert Hall—this competition promises a significant cultural experience for attendees.
Co-founded in 2010 by Dr. Wojciech Kocyan, Artistic Director of the Paderewski Music Society, the competition was last held in 2022 after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event will take place from February 9-14 at Murphy Recital Hall, Loyola Marymount University, where Kocyan also teaches music.
Participants aim to gain recognition and prepare for the highly esteemed International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, scheduled for next year, marking its 100th anniversary since its inception in 1927. "Three of our pianists from 2022 went on to the Chopin Competition," said Patricia K. Rose, Sponsorship Director for the event. "One of our judges is from the Chopin Competition. This is all due to Kocyan."
Kocyan, who holds a doctorate from USC, has an impressive track record, having won First Prize at the Paderewski Competition in Poland and a special prize at the 11th Chopin Competition. Renowned as an international adjudicator, lecturer, and scholar, Kocyan’s influence is evident in the competition’s caliber.
Rose emphasized the remarkable dedication of the participants. "The pianists in our competition have already embarked on international performing careers," she explained. "They study with top teachers at conservatories worldwide, often starting their piano journey around age four or five and practicing up to eight hours a day."
Tickets for the semifinals start at $15, providing an accessible opportunity to hear world-class talent. In contrast, tickets for a performance by a previous Chopin Competition winner at the Walt Disney Concert Hall begin at $250.
The competitors hail from diverse countries, including Armenia, Canada, China, France, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Poland, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Local families, passionate about piano, will host the artists, offering them high-quality grand pianos for practice.
"The piano playing is at the same level as concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall or the Hollywood Bowl, or performances by the LA Philharmonic," Rose noted. "These young pianists will one day be playing on those stages. They are at the beginning of their careers but are already professionals, having performed in top concert halls globally."
The competition features substantial prizes, including a grand prize of $10,000 for the winner, along with additional awards for second and third place, as well as specialization prizes totaling up to $2,000 each. The five-member judging panel will include noted figures such as Gloria Cheng and Wojciech Switala.
This event not only highlights the dedication of young musicians but also serves as an educational and promotional platform for their careers. A live stream of the competition will be available on YouTube, expanding its reach beyond the physical venue.
