Michigan secures victory over Arizona to face Connecticut in the national championship game
INDIANAPOLIS — In a dazzling performance, the Michigan Wolverines defeated the Arizona Wildcats 91-73 in the Final Four on Saturday night, turning a highly anticipated matchup into a showcase of their abilities.
Junior center Aday Mara led the Wolverines with a career-high 26 points and added nine rebounds. Despite playing with an injury, Yaxel Lendeborg contributed 11 points in just 14 minutes. With this victory, Michigan advanced past its fifth consecutive opponent in March Madness by a double-digit margin and became the first team to surpass 90 points five times in a single tournament.
Looking ahead, Michigan will face Connecticut in the championship game on Monday. Connecticut secured its spot with a 71-62 victory over Illinois earlier in the day, a matchup that had been anticipated as the undercard to the main event featuring the top two seeds.
Both Michigan and Arizona entered the contest with the nation’s top two defenses and a wealth of offensive talent. However, it was the Wolverines (36-3) who quickly asserted control, establishing a double-digit lead just 5:31 into the game and executing their game plan efficiently.
Arizona, the Big 12 champion also with a record of 36-3, struggled offensively. Koa Peat managed 16 points and 11 rebounds, while the team shot a disappointing 36% from the field and made just 6 of 17 attempts from beyond the arc. Jaden Bradley, a key player for Arizona, faced early foul trouble and finished the game with 13 points, most of which came during the closing minutes.
This decisive win underscores Michigan’s dominance in the tournament and sets up a compelling title clash with Connecticut.
