Michelle Yeoh Earns Her Place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
Michelle Yeoh Honored with Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
Academy Award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh was celebrated with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Wednesday, recognizing her illustrious career and achievements in cinema, particularly her role in the acclaimed film “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
During the ceremony, Yeoh, who made history as the first Asian woman to win an Oscar for Best Actress in 2023, expressed her disbelief at receiving such an honor. "I never dreamed that I would have my own star etched into the ground of Hollywood Boulevard," she remarked, extending her gratitude to her fans, family, "chosen family," and colleagues.
Accompanied by notable figures, including Oscar-winning director Ang Lee and Jon M. Chu, who directed her in “Crazy Rich Asians” and the upcoming “Wicked” films, Yeoh appeared radiant in a flowing yellow gown.
Lee, reflecting on the honor, humorously questioned, “What took so long?” as he addressed the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce regarding the long-awaited recognition for his friend. He commended Yeoh for her talent, professionalism, and unwavering dedication, adding, "I wouldn’t be surprised if five, 10 years from now, some new generation filmmaker may come up here and celebrate her."
Highlighting the significance of the event, Chu remarked on the representation of “Asian excellence” evident at the ceremony. He praised Yeoh’s grace, stating, “You carry dignity like a superhero cape, effortless, natural.” Chu also referred to Yeoh as a “beacon of hope and possibility,” emphasizing her role as a trailblazer following her Oscar win, which he described as “a career win, but even more so a generational shift.”
Yeoh’s career began with classical ballet training, and she is renowned for performing many of her own stunts, gaining recognition in Hong Kong action cinema before captivating American and international audiences. Her breakthrough came with the James Bond film “Tomorrow Never Dies,” where she played a character that stood as an equal to Bond, setting a precedent in the action genre for women.
