Michael Pennington, Beloved ‘Star Wars’ Actor, Passes Away at 82
Michael Pennington, the esteemed theater actor renowned for his portrayal of Moff Jerjerrod in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, has passed away at the age of 82. His death was confirmed by the British newspaper The Telegraph, although the cause has not been disclosed.
Pennington’s prolific career spanned several decades, earning him acclaim primarily for his role as the bureaucratic military officer in the iconic film. He is particularly remembered for a notable scene in which Jerjerrod is reprimanded by Darth Vader for the sluggish progress on the construction of the second Death Star.
Beyond Star Wars, Pennington appeared in a variety of films, including the 1969 adaptation of Hamlet directed by Tony Richardson, and he portrayed former Labour leader Michael Foot opposite Meryl Streep in the 2011 film The Iron Lady.
Most recently, he appeared in acclaimed television series such as Raised By Wolves, Endeavour, Father Brown, and Silent Witness. His earlier work included the 1980s telemovie The Return of Sherlock Holmes.
Though he had a significant presence on screen, Pennington’s enduring passion lay in theater. He garnered notable acclaim for roles in productions like Hamlet and The Henrys, and in 1989, he starred in The Wars of the Roses, a television adaptation of Shakespeare’s plays.
