Met Gala Sponsors Under Fire: Anna Wintour Shares Her Perspective
Anna Wintour praised philanthropist and former journalist Lauren Sánchez Bezos as a “great lover of costume and obviously of fashion” amid discussions regarding criticism of the Bezos family’s sponsorship of the upcoming 2026 Met Gala.
During an interview with CNN in Doha, Qatar, at the inaugural Franca Fund Gala honoring the late Vogue Italia editor Franca Sozzani, Wintour expressed confidence that Sánchez Bezos would be a “wonderful asset to the museum and the event.”
“We’re very grateful for her incredible generosity,” Wintour noted. “So we’re thrilled she’s part of the night.”
Last week, Jeff Bezos and Sánchez Bezos were announced as the lead sponsors of the event, joined by secondary sponsors French luxury brand Saint Laurent and Vogue publisher Condé Nast.
Earlier this year, Wintour stepped down as editor-in-chief of Vogue US but continues to hold the roles of global editorial director and chief content officer for Condé Nast, overseeing the annual Met Gala.

The announcement of the Bezos sponsorship sparked immediate backlash on social media, with critics arguing that their involvement underscores a growing trend of billionaire influence over cultural institutions. Some voices expressed that their financial contributions could be more effectively allocated to pressing social issues.
One commenter on a Metropolitan Museum Instagram post referred to next year’s gala theme, “Costume Art,” remarking, “However, stop platforming Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez with art and fashion, two places that these two awful, unfettered capitalists will never belong in, no matter how much money they want to throw around to buy culture they have never cultivated and will never inhabit.”
Historically, the Met Gala has received support from luxury brands, including this year’s backing from Louis Vuitton. Sponsors in the past have also included major tech firms such as TikTok, Instagram (owned by Meta), Apple, Yahoo, and Amazon, which supported the event in 2012, with Bezos serving as an honorary chair.
For many observers, the couple’s decision to sponsor the occasion reflects a desire for cultural and fashion legitimacy. Comparisons have been drawn between Sánchez Bezos and Kim Kardashian, who transformed her public persona from reality TV star to a respected figure in high fashion. This metamorphosis, credited in part to Wintour’s endorsement and a Vogue cover featuring Kardashian alongside Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, demonstrates the potential for influence within the fashion sphere.
