Melissa Barrera Responds to Protest at ‘Scream 7’ Premiere: “I See You”
As the stars of Scream 7 attended the world premiere at Paramount Studios on Wednesday, “Free Palestine” protesters gathered outside the lot to voice their dissent regarding the film. Their presence highlighted ongoing tensions surrounding the franchise, particularly in light of recent controversies.
More than two years ago, actress Melissa Barrera was dismissed from the Scream franchise following her public comments about the Israel-Hamas conflict. In response to the protestors’ expression of support, Barrera took to her Instagram Story, posting, “I see you,” accompanied by a heart emoji.
The release of the first trailer for Scream 7 in October sparked significant backlash from fans, leading to calls for a boycott of the movie on social media. Criticism intensified in the wake of Barrera’s exit, with numerous fans expressing their discontent online.
Spyglass Entertainment announced Barrera’s termination in November 2023, citing her social media posts related to the Israel-Hamas conflict as the reason. The company stated it maintained a “zero tolerance” policy regarding antisemitism and hate speech, expressing concern over what they described as “false references to genocide” and other forms of dangerous rhetoric.
Following Barrera’s departure, actress Jenna Ortega also exited the franchise, remarking on the film’s instability without Barrera’s character, Sam Carpenter. Subsequently, director Christopher Landon withdrew from the project, citing “highly aggressive and really scary” death threats directed at his family.
In March 2024, Neve Campbell was officially brought back to reprise her iconic role as the original “final girl,” Sidney Campbell, with Kevin Williamson returning as director. Campbell had previously opted out of Scream VI due to a low pay offer.
The unfolding events surrounding the franchise have raised questions about the implications of public discourse on social media and its impact on artistic projects within Hollywood.
