Melanie Watson, Star of Diff’rent Strokes, Passes Away at 57
Melanie Watson, best known for her role on the classic television series Diff’rent Strokes, has died at the age of 57. Her brother, Robert Watson, confirmed that she passed away on Friday in Colorado Springs after being hospitalized for bleeding.
Born on July 20, 1968, in Dana Point, California, Watson lived with osteogenesis imperfecta, commonly known as brittle bone disease. This condition made her vulnerable to fractures and resulted in low bone density due to a lack of collagen.
From 1981 to 1984, Watson appeared as Kathy Gordon on Diff’rent Strokes, portraying an optimistic child in a wheelchair. Her character played a pivotal role in helping Arnold, portrayed by Gary Coleman, come to terms with his own growth limitations. Watson appeared in four episodes over Seasons 3 through 6.
After retiring from acting, Watson co-founded the nonprofit organization Train Rite, which trains shelter dogs to serve as assistance animals. Since 2019, she had also served as the CEO of Couiffie’s Ranch, an initiative focused on empowering individuals with disabilities to achieve greater independence.
